McKinney Marthas February Block: Log Cabin

This month for our McKinney Marthas get together, we made a log cabin block. The log cabin really is a relatively simple block to sew, although looking at it you may not think so. If you’re interested in how to do it, let me know and I’ll make a quick video tutorial.

Here is one table of chicas working:

The other table declined a photo opportunity ;) I think they were afraid I would blog about ‘em! Imagine that.

Here are the blocks everyone made. I think they turned out fantastic!

And here is a funny picture of “Sister Mary Sara Paigey.” That’s what we call her when we are taking off her shirt off for a bath because she looks like a nun.

The other day I thought Kate was taking a while in the potty so I went to check on her. I found her reading “Technology Review!” ha.

Have a great week!

Tutorial: Everyday 3 Way Accessory

Hi there! Here is the tutorial for the Everyday 3 Way Accessory featured on So You Think You’re Crafty:

Fabric Requirements:

  • 1 yd jersey knit fabric (chocolate)
  • 1 yd jersey knit fabric (mustard)

* Note: you will have extra fabric leftover *

How To:

  • Cut a bunch of 2.5″  x width of fabric strips. I used 13 yellow strips and 7 brown strips for the necklace part. You can add more strips to make it fuller if you’d like. Then I cut an additional 6 yellow strips for the tie. Set aside the tie strips.

  • Serge or stitch each necklace (NOT tie) strip right sides together along the length.

  • Turn strips right side out. I love to use this technique to turn tubes; it’s fast and easy!

  • Serge or stitch each strip together at the ends to create a loop.

  • Layer your loops, alternating colors until you are are pleased with how it looks.

  • Now take the 6 strips you cut for the tie. Remember how you made friendship bracelets back in the day by making knots? That’s what you’re going to do now. You can really knot them anyway you like. If you are knot-challenged, just braid or twist the strands. All we’re looking to do is make something cute to cover up the seams. Here’s a tutorial I found that would work well.

  • After you have your strips knotted, wrap the strand around the seams.

  • Hand stitch the knotted strand to the underside of the loops. Trim the knotted strand.

That’s it! Enjoy :)

If you make one, please at it to our flickr group so others can get inspired!

Phew!

We’re back from Angel Fire, NM (where my in-laws live). This was the first time we had friends and their kids come with us and it was so much fun. I can’t wait to go again!

There were two downers though. The first was that Brad had to leave a day early for work. That meant I got the death sentence privilege of driving 12 hours alone with the girls. You read that right. Twelve hours. God bless the DVD player and Bella Dancerella on repeat.

The second downer was that Sara Paige got sick again.

We took her to the (“the” as in “the only”) doctor in Angel Fire to get checked out on Thursday. She was acting off, had a wet cough, dark circles, and hollow eyes. The doctor said she most likely had pneumonia again (remember she had it 3 weeks ago) and prescribed an antibiotic. Her oxygen level was lower than it should have been which freaked me out. Long story short, I took her to the doctor at home today and her oxygen level is back to normal. After a chest x-ray, she was prescribed an additional antibiotic and breathing treatments but will be just fine.

At the doctor’s office this morning I was impatient and anxious. Our appointment was at 10am and we had been waiting 45min for the doctor to come in the room. 45 minutes is a long time with a cranky, sick, and crying one year old. Kate was being such a great helper but I thought I was going to scream if we had to wait one more minute. I sighed really loudly and nudged (okay, kicked) the stool with wheels into the wall. Kate raised her eyebrows and said “Moooommy… you’re being sassy. I know we’ve been waiting for seven years, but you need to be patient, okay? I’ll give you my sticker if you take a chill pill.”

Oh. my. gosh. That child cracks me up. I could not stop laughing. You’ll be pleased to know I decided to take a chill pill and in turn received a lovely blue fishy sticker.

Hello, From NM!

We’ve been in NM having lots of fun with friends and family, so the ‘ol blog isn’t too exciting this week!

I’ll be back in a few days with some fun things :)

Meanwhile, go check out the kitchen theme this week on SYTYC and vote for your fav!
